070 - Is the Blah We’re Experiencing Languishing?
Welcome to The Fully Lived Life podcast! A podcast for those who are longing to pursue the full life and want to break free from anything that holds them back. Listen in as two friends - a psychologist, Dr. Merry, and a life coach, Gillian - talk about life, love, and purpose - with wisdom, humor, and transparency -  through the lens of science, psychology, and faith. What? Today we dive into an article that was published recently in the New York Times by Social Psychologist  Adam Grant.  He asks “ is the blah you are experiencing - languishing?” So What? He describes languishing as: A name for the blah you're feeling. The void between depression and flourishing - the absence of well being. It can dull your motivation and focus. And it may be the dominant emotion of 2021. We discuss the words languishing and dormancy and what can we expect of ourselves under continuing stressful times. Now What? Therapeutic Tip: 1. What imagined or anticipated threats might be fueling your current level of stress and anxiety, and how does chronic stress manifest itself in your body? 2. Consider the emotional system of your family, and what anxiety and reactivity do you observe? How might you be contributing to that state? How could you help to ease that for yourself and your family? 3. What habits can you put into place (listen again to our Happiness Hacks podcast) on a daily basis to teach your body that you’re safe? Life CoachingTip: I would encourage all of us to think of our “states of well being” on a spectrum. So identify your well-being spectrum - what does it look like to you? From Languishing , Dormant, resting, learning curves to thriving. You may be able to identify other stages in your life. How can you create some check in points when you may be moving down the well being spectrum? How do you create care for yourself at these points so you can get through them and be gentle with yourself that these states don’ t last?
